Natasha Balegamire – DRC
Natasha Balegamire, a 25-year-old visual storyteller and journalist, operates from South Kivu province in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Her profound passion for photography has enabled her to chronicle vital social issues affecting her community. Previously, she served as a communications officer for an international organisation dedicated to addressing chronic malnutrition amongst children aged 0 to 59 months, alongside pregnant and nursing mothers. However, the ongoing rebel occupation in the province necessitated the suspension of this crucial nutrition initiative.
Her compelling photographic portfolio encompasses powerful imagery captured during the project’s implementation across Walungu territory and the Kadutu health zone in Bukavu. She has meticulously documented healthcare provider training sessions and health zone management team workshops on community-based nutrition in Murhesa and Walungu, helping raise awareness about the utilisation of powdered micronutrients for children aged 6 to 23 months.
Through her masterful photography, Natasha persistently illuminates both the challenges and resilience within her community. Her work serves dual purposes – documenting essential public health initiatives whilst amplifying traditionally marginalised voices, thereby reinforcing photography’s role as both a narrative medium and a catalyst for social transformation.
