Chido Nyaruwata – Zimbabwe

Chido Nyaruwata is a Zimbabwean-based African feminist, visual artist and storyteller who dedicates her craft to amplifying African women’s and girls’ voices. Based in Harare, her multifaceted work encompasses research, documentary and nature photography, with particular emphasis on examining the intricate relationships between gender dynamics, environmental concerns and urban living.

Through her distinctive photographic perspective, Chido delves into women’s and girls’ experiences within both natural and constructed environments. She harnesses visual narratives as powerful tools to challenge established gender norms, dismantle societal stereotypes and champion environmental justice causes.

Her compelling work has garnered significant recognition through numerous exhibitions and fellowship programmes. In 2025, she joined the Free2Express photography and poetry project as a cohort member, an initiative spearheaded by Magamba Network and WE LEAD Trust. That same year, her striking landscape photography capturing the Mtarazi Falls Sky Walk Bridge and its environs was showcased in the Nhoroondo Dzematambidzanwa Virtual Group Exhibition, hosted by the Shepherd Foundation.

The year 2024 saw her contributing selected works from her ongoing project This Land to the We (Are) Invested Group Exhibition, orchestrated by Pin Africa and Unpublished. Her engagement with critical pan-African discourse received further acknowledgement in 2022 when she was awarded the prestigious Ufahamu Africa Podcast Fellowship.

In 2021, her mobile film production Food Security and Waste Management in Harare achieved recognition in the Earthbeat Challenge, a distinguished international short film competition affiliated with the United Nations. The film received international exposure through its screening at a COP26 side event in Glasgow, UK.

Chido maintains her dedication to utilising visual storytelling as a medium to spotlight underrepresented voices, elevate feminist narratives and foster meaningful dialogues about justice, sustainability and identity.
