How to tackle the rise of the anti-gender movement

This short course has been created as an introduction to gender justice and to tackle the rise of the anti-gender movement backlash around the world.

Over the past several decades, in every part of the world, hard-won strides have been made towards equality of access, opportunity and outcome for women and girls.

Though less universal, there have also been important legislative and cultural shifts to recognize LGBTQ+ people and protect them from discrimination. But a backlash is growing and spreading.

From the US to Uganda, comprehensive sexuality education (CSE) in schools, sexual and reproductive rights and LGBTQ+ rights have all come under attack.

Researchers of this phenomenon refer it as the “anti-gender movement” and warn it threatens women’s rights, gender and sexuality diversity, and democracy itself.

So, what is the anti-gender movement? Here’s what you need to know.

For years, feminist and LGBTI+ advocates have championed the rights of women and gender minorities. Although significant progress in legislation protecting against gender-based violence and discrimination has been achieved, we now face growing opposition.

From Turkey to the UK, anti-gender groups have mobilised against gender justice, portraying it as a threat to justice gender and the family values. These movements have become increasingly coordinated, networked and prominent.

These anti-gender movements threaten human rights and the progress groups like Gender Links have made.

This course aims to build learner confidence in key gender justice concepts, examining what drives anti-gender movements through case studies of attacks on human rights.

You’ll discover how activists across southern Africa and globally are collaborating to protect women, LGBTI+ and gender diverse people, with inspiring examples and practical guidance for advancing gender justice citizenship and development in schools, workplaces and advocacy spaces.

Week one is a look at gender justice and why it is a human rights issue.

By the end of this week, you will be able to:

Recognise the current context of gender justice and why it is a pressing human rights issue

Define and better understand key concepts and terminology such as sex, gender and intersectionality

Explore gender as a social construct

We all share the responsibility of fixing what’s broken in our world. Find out how you can help. Learn how to answer the call for social change, research an issue, and set goals.

Get strategies for driving social change, individually and through collective action. This course is a companion to this SAMSO course. https://samso.africa/course/we-the-people-make-change-happen-2/
