3.2 Gender justice principles

0

There is no rulebook for gender justice principles. Activists come to this work from diverse life experiences and for different reasons. Some are drawn to a particular issue that impacts their lives and rights. Others are keen to show solidarity with those who don’t enjoy the same access to rights as they do.

Much like other human rights activism, there can be debate within feminist and LGBTI+ movements over which campaign issues should take priority.

A gender justice approach recognises that these issues are not competing, rather they are linked.

We believe gender justice work should be guided by three principles:

  1. Use an intersectional lens
  2. Frame all issues of gender injustice as systemic problems that are underpinned by patriarchy
  3. Centre the voices and leadership of those with lived experience.

This is not a comprehensive list, rather a jumping off point to consider how you might approach or reorient work in this area.

Discussion

We have discussed other key aspects of exploring gender justice in week 1, what can you remember?

What would you add to the list?
