Issue 4 Open Call: Supernatural
- Why do you believe what you believe?
- How do you practice your beliefs?
What do you hold sacred?
For Issue 4 of No!Wahala Magazine, we invite African photographers to submit compelling photography projects that delve deep into your personal understanding and experience of spirituality. We seek visual narratives that explore the profound connections between faith, culture, and identity through your unique lens.
The issue’s theme, ‘supernatural’, draws inspiration from phenomena that transcend scientific explanation and natural laws – those mystical elements brought into existence through divine intervention, magical forces, or powers that exist beyond our physical reality. We are eager to witness your distinctive interpretation and artistic expression of these metaphysical concepts.
We have a particular interest in works that thoughtfully engage with African spirituality, Indigenous knowledge systems, and pre-colonial worldviews. Your approach may reflect deep reverence, constructive critique, intellectual curiosity, or intimate personal rituals. We welcome perspectives that challenge conventional narratives and reclaim spiritual heritage.
Issue 4 aims to create an expansive platform that honours both tangible and intangible aspects of faith and mysticism. Your submissions may be literal or abstract interpretations – we encourage you to push creative boundaries while remaining authentic to your vision. Let your photographs probe the depths of your convictions, confront generational fears, question historical erasures, and redefine supernatural elements according to your lived experience.
We invite you to share visual stories of your sacred spaces, ancestral connections, prophetic dreams, and devotional practices. Transform your camera into a gateway between worlds – capturing glimpses of the divine as you perceive it. Document the rituals, symbols, and ceremonies that give meaning to your spiritual journey.
This is an opportunity to contribute to an important dialogue about African spirituality in contemporary times. Through your images, help us understand how traditional beliefs persist and evolve, how different faith systems interact, and how supernatural elements remain relevant in modern African society.
Deadline: July 15th 2025
